Let's Hear it for New York

I’ve been waiting to say this properly all weekend, but I just wanted to express how proud I am of the state of New York for recently passing a bill that allows same-sex marriage. According to the Los Angeles Times, the decisive votes were cast by two Republicans, veteran Sen. Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie and Marc Grisanti, a freshman from Buffalo.

"I cannot legally come up with an argument against same-sex marriage," Grisanti, a lawyer, said during the debate. "I cannot deny a person, a human being ... the same rights I have with my wife."

What a wonderful way to empower the rights of so many people after another successful Pride Week and yet bring us all one step closer to opening our minds to understanding and accepting not only the differences in each other’s sexual orientation, but also in matters of race and gender. The fact that the bill passed in New York automatically raises the odds that similar bill may be taken into more consideration. The support that the city has shown lately – from the rainbow-colored flags displayed around the city to the Michael Kors’ shop windows displaying wedding cakes – has been truly inspiring too. I am excited to report that New York is now the largest state to pass gay marriage, doubling, in fact, the amount of gay Americans who are legally allowed to marry. Now on to the next question, which state will be next? Remember: All you need is love.
