Shoppers Beware: NYC Proposes a Crackdown on Counterfeit Items

Who hasn't heard of the knockoff purses being secretly sold and purchased in the back alleys of New York City? I personally remember at least one or two whispered inquires of my interest in a Coach, Chanel or Gucci purses while strolling along Canal Street.
However, this may soon change. NY city council member Margaret Chin has made it her mission to criminalize the purchase of fake and trademarked items. Chin has said that money from counterfeit goods usually funds unsafe child labor and even terrorism.
The proposed legislation would make buying such items would attach a class A misdemeanor that could include either jail time or a $1000 ticket. Although the punishment may seem kind of harsh, you have to actually be caught buying a counterfeit item to be charged.
